Preface of the Project

Mangrove forests are an example of a natural ecosystem that should be protected because they support biodiversity as well as being a valuable resource for nearby communities. One of the biggest mangrove forests in the world, the Bangladeshi Sundarbans serve as the country’s lungs. The immense resources of the Sundarbans, which also have a range of diverse tree species, provide the majority of the inhabitants in Bangladesh’s southern region with a means of subsistence. Numerous creatures dwell in the Sundarbans forest fearlessly because of its size and natural surroundings, which have made it a sanctuary for animals. However, our mangrove forest is currently under danger owing to climate change and a significant amount of tree killing, so we must act now to conserve this forest or else we will face numerous risks in the future. SESDO has therefore taken on this project after carefully weighing the many advantages of mangrove forests as well as the people and animals who rely on them.

Significance of the Project

Mangroves may appear to be nothing more than the coastal cousins of interior forests, yet these diverse ecosystems sustain the earth and people in special ways, such as by acting as fish spawning grounds, carbon sinks, and flood protection. Nevertheless, mangrove forests are in danger despite how important they are. More than a quarter have already vanished, and a large portion of that clearing is being done to reclaim land for infrastructure, industrial expansion, and agricultural usage. There are local hazards as well as global concerns like pollution and climate change. These include overharvesting of wood for building and construction as well as for fuel, dams and irrigation systems that decrease the quantity of water that reaches the woods, and over fishing that disturbs fish ecosystems and food chains. Mangrove forests have a variety of other direct and indirect benefits than those mentioned above. The following lists the significance of mangrove forests, their many resources, and the creatures that call them home.

  1. They act as a purely natural coastal defense.
  2. Since they absorb carbon.
  3. A means of subsistence.
  4. They promote ecotourism
  5. They are incredibly diverse.
  6. Turtles, fish, birds, sharks, and even tigers live in mangroves along with a variety of other animals.
  7. Compared to other kinds of forests, mangroves have the ability to store three to five times more carbon in the same amount of soil.

Objectives of the project

SESDO has taken on this project with a number of noble intentions in mind, taking into account the size of the Sundarbans. Below are mentioned some of the project’s various goals.

  1. To protect the huge trees of Sundarbans from various natural calamities.
  2. Considering the various benefits of Sundarbans and making the people of this region aware of its importance.
  3. To inform about the dangers of deforestation of mangrove forests.
  4. Conducting various seminars, field meetings on the importance of mangrove forests on the environment.
  5. To raise awareness of the value of various species of animals, such as tigers and deer, on the environment in Sundarbans so that people do not indiscriminately kill these creatures.
  6. To raise awareness among the local population of the value of mangrove forests in preserving the ecological balance
